How IOP Can Support Your Recovery Journey

Which One Is Best for Me?

If you suffer from substance abuse or addiction and want to make a change, you may be researching some treatment options. You may have run into results like residential programs where you are housed in a facility and treated for addiction in an environment where you can’t go about your daily life. This might not be an option for you, either due to a lack of a support system or financial downfalls. There are more affordable treatment options.

Whether you suffer from substance abuse or self-medicate due to other mental health issues, Core Recovery’s IOP and PHP program may be for you. To know what treatment is right for you, a clinician, along with professional staff, will work to identify which program will work best.

What are these programs, and how do they work? Here are the differences between the programs and how each one can help you or a loved one.

What is IOP?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a program that can help people who suffer from depression, eating disorders, or any addictions and dependencies. This type of program doesn’t offer detoxification or ongoing supervision from the staff. With IOP, patients can go about their daily life while also getting the help they need. Participants learn coping and problem-solving skills while also becoming aware to recognize unhealthy behaviors and master how to ask for help.

An IOP usually combines DBT. DBT is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness abilities that help individuals with mood, anxiety, anxiety, addiction, impulse control, and personality disorders. It is an evidence-based therapy that helps identify the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and actions and their impact on life circumstances.

IOP is best for those who do not require around-the-clock monitoring and have already gone through the acute phase of withdrawal. Patients can still engage in their personal lives as they learn how to control their impulses and prevent further self-harm.

What is PHP?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intense treatment program for those suffering from addiction and other mental health issues. This occurs during the daytime and offers individual and group therapy sessions and activities. Patients return home at night when their day at PHP is done. Before programs like AA or a 12-step, a PHP psychological health and wellness program is called to take care of the actions before it triggers dependency.

PHP is best for those who:

  • Struggle to function in the workplace, school, or home
  • They are not at risk of hurting themselves or others
  • Are medically stable
  • Are eager to take part in therapy
  • Experience co-morbid conditions in mental health and wellness and substance abuse.

Those who participate in PHP receive a dedicated team to help make the recovery process more comfortable using various treatment options. Additionally, with PHP participation, you can learn recovery skills and develop a support system custom for you. A PHP allows you to find the recovery you need while giving you the freedom that a residential program does not.

This treatment program is for those who feel they may suffer a relapse even after their residential treatment or need further detoxification. This isn’t for people who want a quick solution. PHP takes four to eight hours a day for five days a week.

Which One Is Best for Me?

If you struggle with addiction, you may be looking for a therapy option that will work. Whether you have just left your treatment for substance abuse or are looking for a program that best fits you, you need something that fits into your schedule without giving up all of your freedom like a traditional residential program.

Most of the time, a mental health condition such as anxiety can trigger a person to self-medicate with substances or alcohol as a coping mechanism. These coping mechanisms aren’t seen as an addiction, but they are still in danger of winding up in the spiral of addiction because of that dependency. PHP, in addition to IOP outpatient programs, can help.

Both PHP and IOP programs are more affordable than a typical recovery program, but they share the same goal of obtaining sobriety and regression prevention. Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs are both great options to help you. Core Recovery offers both of these programs with a dedicated team to help you obtain a full recovery.
