What Does “Partial Hospitalization Program” or “PHP” mean?

“Partial hospitalization program,” or “PHP,” is an outdated and confusing term. PHP is the highest level of outpatient (i.e., non-residential) mental health care. There are no overnight stays at a facility or hospital; patients live at home and attend programming during the day.

Core Recovery has two separate PHP Mental Health programs—one for adults and one for adolescents. Core’s mental health PHP programs treat individuals struggling with a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, stress, PTSD, bipolar disorder (BPD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, and more.

Core Recovery’s Mental Health PHP Program provides comprehensive, integrated care, five days per week. Core Recovery’s clinical team includes therapists, psychiatric professionals, registered dietitians, and case managers, all of whom work collaboratively to meet the individualized needs of every patient.

Mental Health Treatment Tailored to Your Needs

From the first day of treatment, the Core Recovery clinical team engages warmly, honestly, and empathetically with every patient to develop a customized treatment plan that is tailored to meeting that patient’s unique clinical needs and personal goals. As a Core Recovery patient, your individualized treatment plan will include a combination of group therapy, individual therapy, creative expression therapy, family therapy, and psychiatric/medication management. Treatment plans are further customized to provide additional treatment options that may be best suited to your challenges and goals, including EMDR therapy and diet and nutrition counseling.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Core Recovery uses evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)—to provide each patient with an enriching therapeutic experience that propels their treatment forward in a manner that is supported by the latest research and treatments methodologies.

A Shared Commitment to Your Success

Patients enter PHP programs for different reasons. Some may choose to take time away from work or school to receive the mental health care that they need to return to their ordinary routines. Others may be discharging from a residential care facility and looking for “step-down” care. In either case, the decision to participate in a partial hospitalization program is a significant choice that affects you and your loved ones.

At Core Recovery, our commitment to you is that we will stand shoulder to shoulder with you on your treatment journey. From the moment you enter our PHP program, we will work together towards a shared goal of reducing the amount of care that you require (from PHP, to IOP, and ultimately to weekly therapy sessions) in a way that promotes sustained wellness and recovery.

FAQs About Core Recovery's Co-Occurring IOP

A: At Core Recovery your treatment program will be customized to meet your individual needs.  Once we have completed our evidence-based assessments, determination of level of care and program type will be a collaborative process with your treatment team.

A: Your outpatient treatment program will begin with an assessment of your needs.

A therapist will then create an individualized treatment plan based on your diagnosis and where you are in your recovery process.

You’ll work with your therapist on a schedule for how many days and hours you will attend the program each week, with whom you will meet, and what skills you will work on.

This treatment program and schedule can be adjusted as needed, depending on how you progress through the program.

A: It is common for patients to apply for FMLA or Short-Term Disability while in our care.

Often, approval is dependent on your level and amount of care, which is determined during your initial intake appointment.

Our PHP patients participate in the program for a minimum of 20 hours a week. The IOP requires a minimum of 9 hours and up to 19 hours a week.

A: We create an individual treatment plan for each patient, so the length of the program is tailored based on our patient’s clinical assessment.

IOP and PHP are designed to create a transition to a happier and more rewarding life—and that timeframe looks different for each person.

On average, patients at Core Recovery attend IOP or PHP between three and six months.
