What is Bulimia Nervosa?

Bulimia Nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterized by recurrent, oftentimes secretive, episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain. These behaviors commonly include self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise.

Understanding the Symptoms

Symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa can include:

  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating, characterized by consuming large amounts of food in a discrete period while feeling a loss of control.
  • Compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics, fasting, or excessive exercise.
  • Feelings of shame, guilt, or distress after binge eating episodes.
  • Preoccupation with body shape and weight.
  • Dental issues, swollen salivary glands, gastrointestinal problems, electrolyte imbalances, and other physical complications.
