What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge Eating Disorder is a serious eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food in a discrete period and a lack of control over eating. Unlike bulimia nervosa, individuals with BED do not engage in compensatory behaviors, such as purging or excessive exercise, to counteract the binge eating episodes.

Understanding the Symptoms

Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder can include:

  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating, involving eating larger amounts of food than most people would eat in a similar time frame under similar circumstances.
  • Feeling a lack of control over eating during the episodes.
  • Eating more rapidly than normal, eating until feeling uncomfortably full, eating large amounts of food when not physically hungry, and eating alone due to embarrassment about the quantity of food consumed.
  • Feelings of distress, guilt, or shame following binge eating episodes.
  • Often experiencing fluctuations in weight, which may lead to obesity or other health concerns.
